The green smoothie is the camouflage smoothie of the health and wellness community. No matter what you put in there, if it’s green it won’t blow your cover that you are really drinking the sugariest fruit loaded smoothie you could find. As a healthy warrior of the wellness community I’m on to you. While green smoothies are a great start to the morning or a great way to make sure you are “allegedly” getting your vegetables, most store-bought or even homemade smoothies tend to be lite on veggies heavy on fruit and sugar. The best green smoothie is not just green in color but green in its ingredients.

A real green smoothie must be green in every sense of the word. As I said, it’s not how many ingredients you throw in a smoothie, it’s what you put in it. The perfect green smoothie should include a base green that you would typically throw in a salad, a miracle ingredient, a shot of something you really don’t want to drink, something to bring down inflammation- typically something alkalizing, something that will give your smoothie some texture, a serious health or nutrient boost, and a good old liquid.
You can also add fruit as an option if this is too green for you. Don’t go crazy- I usually add fresh or frozen mango because I’m half Puerto Rican and I’m gonna eat my mango as much as I want!
This is my almost everyday morning smoothie to set me up for the rest of the day. Get your NutriBullet or Blender ready because here’s what goes in the Greenest Green Green Smoothie:
A Green Smoothie to Wake all You Sleeping Beauties.
Base ingredient: 1 or 2 handfuls of spinach. You can also use kale, arugula, swiss chard, etc.
Miracle superfood ingredient: 1/4 avocado-1/2 avocado ( I eat a whole avocado a day because I want those nutrients!) You can also list spirulina, spinach, and almonds under this category.
Texture: 1/2 or a whole banana
Inflammation fighter: 1 inch peeled ginger and 1/2 squeeze of lemon
Something you don’t want to drink: A shot of wheatgrass, algae, hemp powder (great options of vegetarians), red reishi powder, or maca powder (not when you are trying to calm your immune system though folks). This ingredient is extra healthy that you know if it wasn’t going in your smoothie, you might not eat it.

Liquid: 1/2 – 1 cup Water, Coconut Water, or Almond Milk. Follow the line on your container to about half an inch under max.
Optional: 1/4 cup (or less) frozen mango or fresh mango
For the ultimate smoothie place the softest ingredients on the bottom and the hardest ingredients closer to the top so when you flip it upside down those tough ingredients get blended first. You’ll know your smoothie consistency is perfect when it creates a little whirlpool as it blends.

The Marine Collagen and Wheatgrass in this smoothie are no joke. I am definitely not a fan of drinking wheat grass though I’ll do a shot if someone else buys me one because that’s just the type of girl I am. The lemon and ginger are my alkalizing inflammation ninjas, while the banana and avocado add a nice consistency to this yummy healthy green smoothie.
Haven’t you heard, avocado is a miracle fruit and if I’m eating for health and trying to grow my hair back from that time I induced my own alopecia areata, I’ll eat avocado at pretty much every meal. The little sweetness comes from a bit of mango because mango is my absolute favorite!

This is my morning smoothie and if I drink this in the morning I know I have already nailed the rest of my day. To be clear fruit is not my enemy and I eat a healthy amount of fruit a day. I just save most of it for non-smooths options.
